Kaafu Atoll is where the capital of Maldives, Malé lies and consists of two separate atolls; North Malé Atoll and South Malé Atoll. It is the largest and most well-known atoll in the Maldives, and is where the biggest economic and tourist population lies as well. Located in the center of the atoll chain, Malé comprises 80 islands, 12 of which are inhabited. Practically all the uninhabited islands in this region are now tourist resorts, or used for industrial purposes.

The Main airport in the country, Velana International Airport, is also in Kaafu Atoll.
